about

Chris: There was a period where we thought our 3rd album ‘Go and See’ was going to be our “Horse Album”. In the end, only one of our vaguely horse-themed songs stayed on the final track listing and Charlie and Horse didn’t quite make it to the finish line.
This song was inspired by two unrelated things: I witnessed a white horse gleefully rolling itself in mud on a quiet morning in Rivelin Valley and Mario had a conversation with their housemate comparing the achievements of the great ancient civilisations (i.e. The Vikings and their longboats) with the contributions of 20th century pop and rock icons (i.e. Neil Young’s 1974 classic On The Beach). The titular Charlie being that housemate of Mario’s: one Charlie Kondras - a man bountiful with bon mots, all ripe for plucking and sticking in a song. The fact that the two title characters are both drug slang I think is a coincidence. It only just occurred to me now writing the notes actually. Or maybe it was intentional and I forgot? I do however remember intentionally putting shades of Dylan’s ‘When I Paint My Masterpiece’ in the tune. Mario did most of the words on this one and we sang it together, a real collab ! Had a good energy to it when we were recording (provided mostly by good ol’ Zac B on drums) but the final product didn’t quite match up to the rest of the album.

lyrics

I say ‘It turns out that Meersbrook
Was right on the border
Between the anglo-saxon kingdoms of
Northumberland and Mercia’

We’ve recently really gotten
into vikings, we are
watching all of
Neil Oliver’s stuff on the bbc iplayer

You shift in your seat
And sip on your holsten pils
And say ‘its interesting, that
the vikings could build
Like incredible longboats
But they couldn’t draw them for shit.’

And we chat for a while
And eventually reach
Comparing viking longboats
To ‘On the Beach’
You gesture with your can and say
‘I’m sure theres an ancient civilisation
That’s really more impressive
Than Neil Young…
But this is not it.’

I count on my fingers:
Aqueducts, underfloor heating
Mad Satyricon orgies,
big parties and feasting

But even if you set aside
Every caesar stabber
No-one in the roman empire
Could lay down a tune like ABBA

‘It must have been a sight,
When the elephants swung their trunks
But Hannibal couldn’t tinkle the ivories
like Thelonius Monk’
You drain the last of your can
And you shake your head.

I start to say something about ancient greece
And democracy
Some kind of comparison with bob dylan
Or elvis presley
But i just sit and sip my tea
I’m sure there’s an ancient civilisation
That practiced a form of hibernation
I head to bed

So this morning I went out for a run
Breath visible in the cold
I ran through the wind, down the branch-strewn
valley road

And on my way home I saw a white horse
Rolling gleefully on the muddy ground
I slowed, and glanced about for someone to share the moment with
