about

Chris: another pandemic era song about friendship, this one pairing the knockabout outdoor fun of an Enid Blyton adventure with the rich interior thrill of a Facebook messenger group chat. A tribute to Lauren and Liberty and the time we spent sharing stories and jokes and making memes for an audience of exactly 4 people. This also has, I believe, a classic phone recording feature: my partner Jade coming into the room while I'm in the middle of a recording, her seeing what I'm doing and swiftly exiting again. One can almost hear her eye roll on the recording.

lyrics

Julian brings the sandwiches
Anne has a hot flask of tea
Dick supplies lashings of puns
And Georgina’s brought homemade memes
Timmy shares a shaggy dog tale
About some out of date feta
Since we formed our club
We agree that we
Feel much better

Dick is proficient in sailing
And George says she knows semaphore
Anne told a tale of a self-checkout theft
And we laughed until we were sore
Timmy vents about their housemates
hogging the kitchen for hours
Since we formed our club
it's a space, it's a place
That’s all ours

Julian hears from the fisherman’s son
Smugglers work out of this bay
Dick sends a pic of ginormous squash
He picked up at the market that day
Timmy’s housebound and lounging around
Waiting for a delivery
Since we formed our club
We’re all there to share
Gripes and recipes

Together they write songs that masquerade as comic, but on closer listening reveal themselves to be a deep and poignant exploration of the human condition.
