about

Chris: a rare bit of Soup Review ‘character work’. This is a song from the perspective of someone who has been forced into servitude by some kind of mob boss. The way I think of it, the protagonist had historically committed a misdeed against the mob boss and in order to keep their life they had to leave their family and give themselves over to serving the mob. So then they’re stuck in this limbo of being alive, but not living their chosen life. Quite affecting actually.
I remember being aesthetically inspired by the (frankly quite bonkers) Al Pacino drama Hunters. Though not really anything in particular from it. There was just one bit that featured a dark limo at night I think. Don’t take this as a recommendation for the (frankly quite bonkers) Al Pacino drama Hunters.

lyrics

I am the driver

she is the boss

I am her debtor and she

she knows the cost

my gloves are worn now

and a little frayed

is there

much between detained

and saved?

I don't dwell on it

what brought me here

for years I kept it in the

rear view mirror

I keep my eyes on

the turns the road takes

and I

focus on the choices I

can make

when i'm out on calm stretch

silent miles passing underneath the wheels

I get caught in a reverie

ah ah

what it comprises is simple:

chocolate babka and freshly brewed cup of joe

sunday mornings with you and our kids

another big job

one more mouth mute

another morning cleaning

the limo's boot

her victims are neither

my friend or foe

but they

may be more lucky than

i know

when i'm out on calm stretch

silent miles passing underneath the wheels

I get caught in a reverie

ah ah

what it comprises is simple:

chocolate babka and freshly brewed cup of joe

sunday mornings with you and our kids

Together they write songs that masquerade as comic, but on closer listening reveal themselves to be a deep and poignant exploration of the human condition.
