about

Chris: My family is an incredible source of material. None less so than my mum who, with her collection of over 17 different nativity sets, inspired this song. Traditionally, one is supposed to take down all your Christmas stuff on the epiphany, the same day that we celebrate the kings arriving at Jesus’ stable.
Through the Christmas period each set of kings lurks on a nearby bookshelf or mantelpiece to show that they’re ‘on their way’, but then having finally introduced each set of kings to their respective nativity, my mum feels ‘mean’ for packing them up in their boxes so soon after arriving at the stable. So she keeps them out another day so they get their time in the sun. A similar kind of sentimentality around objects applies to the subject of the second verse: a bag my mum keeps marked ‘odd gloves’.

lyrics

‘Mum’ i said
‘It's the day after epiphany
Shouldn’t you have taken down
your christmas tree?
Have you lost your grip on christianity
With your tardy packing
Of your nativity’

She said:
Those poor brave boys
Those three wise men
Had just turned up on the scene
I can’t dismiss them after half a day’s work
I’m not that mean
those poor brave boys
Those three wise men
Had just turned up on the scene
I can’t dismiss them
I’m not that mean

‘Mum’ i said
Is this a kind of insanity
Or, i don’t know, is it naive positivity
That there is a tesco bag from 1993
That’s marked ‘odd gloves’ sitting in the attic eaves

She said:
Those poor brave souls
Those single hands
Just searching for their pair
I can’t just chuck them
I know their other halves
must be somewhere
Those poor brave souls
Those single hands
Just searching for their pair
I know their partners
Must be somewhere
