about

Mario: My dad, uncles and grandma retell this story of my Italian granddad’s, who died before I was born. I love it, they always use it as a way of illustrating how superstitious southern Italians are, and finish it with the thought - ‘it might not have been a werewolf though’, which is just chef’s kiss, ‘it might have been an insane person, you know the word ‘lunatic’ relates to the moon, people are affected by the moon’ yada yada yada, which is pretty dark and obviously not at all chef’s kiss, but revealing in its way. I just love the idea of a werewolf wandering around the countryside of immediately postwar Cassino - a city that was bombed to shit because of its tactical importance. There’s something really evocative about that that I didn’t at all manage to get into the song, I’d say. Last line’s a cracker though.

lyrics

My grandad said he shot a werewolf
And he swore that I was true
In the countryside around Cassino by
The light of the full moon

Alone on a road grown hairy he was
Making his way back home
After everything was bombed to shit
Or rather mud and stone

He heard a throaty growling coming
From a ragged hedge
Then bolted through the dirt
Upon his wildly flailing legs

I can’t imagine the branches of lemon trees
Dropped under the weight of fruit
I can imagine a man I never met
Werewolf in pursuit

The doorway of a farmhouse
A curtain shut out the night
A shotgun was to hand now
Fired off in manic fright

A thunder and a yelping as a
She’ll knocked down its mark
And then the wounded target
Scrabbling off in the dark

If it was something else what could it have been?
Maybe a dog or a bear or human being?
My other grandad loved that stupid joke:
I used to be a werewolf, but I’m alright now
