about

Chris: I get hazy on the dates and timelines of when certain songs were written but if this isn’t a lockdown song I don’t know what is. Sheffield is full of rows of Victorian terraced housing, and it wouldn’t be overdoing it to describe the living conditions as still (lovely Victorian phrase) “cheek by jowl”. Lots of people, shared gardens, thin walls. You are very aware of what’s generally going on in your neighbour’s lives, even if you don’t want to be. If you add a national lockdown to what is already inherently nosy architecture, then you’ve got yourself a constantly unfolding drama where you are both audience and player. Social distancing and isolation were the big ideas at that time but I felt like I couldn't escape from the lives of others. I was trapped by them! I couldn’t bloody move for people! Our safe place, our home, was liable to be invaded at any moment by any number of echoes of the lives all around us!

lyrics

the neighbours
over the way
are remonstrating with their dog again today
'alfie come on, alfie please
come on alfie, won't you listen to me?'
this play's delivered to our attic by the wind
and i'm just trying to let my foot cream soak in

the neighbours
next door but one
looked at their garden and declared 'lets get all this gone'
stripped the paving down to the earth
an englishman's castle needs 6 square feet of astro turf
the intermittent drills break through the calm
like the worst 3 day long snooze alarm

flute practice
yes its flute practice time
another 10 minutes playing that one specific line
5 fractured thoughts
and a spluttered curse
'does it sound to you like
she's actually getting worse?'
her learning leaks out through the wall behind the bookcase
a sonic stow away slips itself into our space

go for a cig
become entrapped
by the man next door who starts another dead end chat
we pass the time of day
until the day's time's passed
i'm shackled by small talk
and my body is held fast
i wriggle free, saying 'tea needs to be made'
back to the house where only drills, flutes and dogs can invade
